Brief Introduction in Measure Theory

Sydney Black

My research project is titled Brief Introduction into Measure Theory. Henri Lebesgue is a French mathematician whose life was a series of important contributions to the field of mathematics, teaching new minds of math, and attending the most prestigious schools to learn math. Lebesgue is best known for his contributions to integration in calculus. A measure describes a function defined on a sigma-algebra of subsets of X and assigns each subset to a value on the positive reals. Along with credentials of measure and propositions, Lebesgue used his definition of measure to create a new way to integrate functions. This method was created so that we could find the area of functions that are not defined on a interval.

  • Sydney Black is from Greenwood, SC, and graduated from Ninety-Six High School. She chose Lander because it was the smartest financial option and offered Teaching Fellows. She is finishing her degree in secondary mathematics and student teaching at Dixie High School. After graduation she will start her first year teaching at Westview Middle School.
