In this poster presentation, we will look at the impact Gladys West had on math. Gladys West was one of two black women hired as a mathematician to work at the Naval Proving Ground. She, along with her colleagues developed and computed different types of algorithms for multiple projects such as Project 29V, GEOS-3, and SEASAT. The work done on Project 29V led to the creation of the Global Positioning System, or GPS which is used daily by people all over the world.
Elizabeth Zeigler is a senior mathematic dual engineering major from Bonneau, SC. She has been a manager for the Lander University Softball Team and worked for Lander Athletics as a photographer/videographer. Elizabeth plans to attend Clemson in the fall of 2022 to pursue a civil engineering degree and work in the bridge construction industry.
