The works of Brahmagupta

Tyler Prentice

In this poster we explore the works of Brahmagupta in astronomy and mathematics and compare them to others at the time while we also explore how his works relate to modern mathematics. His work with zero, his most popular discovery, as an integer instead of a counting number was groundbreaking for his time. His use of Algebra in astronomy allowed him to tackle concepts algebraically rather than relying on geometry. This led to many interesting discoveries which eventually ended up, in his final work, Khanda-khādyaka. This work was then used as a textbook for studying mathematics and astronomy. So, in all, while we are unable to directly show any impact on future students or mathematics Bragmagupta was rightly called, “The Jewel of Indian Mathematics”.

  • Tyler Prentice is a junior mathematics education major. He is a transfer from Illinois starting his second semester at Lander. When finished at Lander he plans to teach mathematics in South Carolina.
