Living with Dyslexia: Student’s Point of View

De’Asia Jenkins

Dyslexia is a learning disorder that affects how the brain processes language, making it difficult to read. Having a specific learning disability such as dyslexia can come with both academic and social-emotional struggles. Dyslexia isn’t something that can be “cured” but managing it through early intervention and specific accommodations can provide the best outcome. It can sometimes be overlooked and undiagnosed up until adulthood. For this project, the published literature on dyslexia was researched through EBSCO databases to discover the effects dyslexia has on students in higher education, focusing on strategies for success in college and reasons why students with the disability may or may not share their history. Oftentimes students react out of fear and choose not to disclose their disability; as a result, they are likely to work ten times harder than the average student.
