Honors Medal Checklist

Please use the checklist below to track your progress through the Honors curriculum.  The criteria for receiving the Honors College Medal at Graduation are:

The “Gateway” courses:

  • Honors 210 (typically taken in your first year in the program) - This requirement will be waived for students enrolled at Lander during COVID-19 travel restrictions.

  • Honors 211 (typically taken in your first year in the program)

Three additional “Core” honors courses (9 additional hours) earned in any of the HONS seminars numbered HONS 291 – HONS 398: 

  • HONS course of your choice _______________

  • HONS course of your choice _______________

  • HONS course of your choice _______________

Note: With the official written approval of your honors advisor and Dr. Craton, you may sometimes substitute a research project, a study abroad transfer course, internship, or a non-honors course with an added project for an HONS core course.

The Break Away:

  • Break Away Proposal Form—submitted to Dr. Barnette and approved by the Honors Committee (click on the link to access the form)

  • Completed Break Away

The Capstone Courses:

  • HONS 489 (one credit hour, typically taken the spring semester after your Break Away)

  • HONS 499 (one credit hour, typically taken your final spring semester before graduation)

GPA of 3.25 or higher by the semester of graduation 

  • GPA __________  ≥ 3.25

·       Honors Medalists receive recognition at the Academic Awards Ceremony and a notation on their transcript and diploma. Honors Medalists also walk first at the Commencement Ceremony and are presented as Honors College Graduates.

·       For students who achieve most of the goals above but are missing one key element, we present the Honors Pin award at the annual Academic Awards Ceremony. The pin comes with bragging rights for grad school applications and resumes. And a pin.
