Bilingual Education: An Investment in Society

Carson Langston

This presentation will address the unique impact of being bilingual and of bilingual education. In the South we often see people with skewed views of other cultures and lack of understanding of other countries. Including these languages serves as inclusion and representation of other cultures. Bilingual education is also profoundly beneficial for native English speakers. Studies have shown academic benefits to learning more than one language. Investing in a bilingual educational experience is a benefit not only to individual students but also society. Learning a different language makes people aware that there is more than one way to think about things. This is an important skill to have in an increasingly social environment during a time where empathy may be in short supply.
