Creating Workplace Community
Ali Faile
Creating a community within a workplace can completely transform the job experience. According to the Harvard Business Review, a positive workplace has multiple benefits for employers, employees, and the overall business. This presentation outlines key principles for creating a workplace community as observed through a yearlong human resources internship with the pharmaceutical manufacturing company Lonza located in Greenwood, South Carolina. For example, there are many different events that the Lonza human resource department hosts in order to facilitate a community between all 700 colleagues. Through its programming and workplace culture, Lonza’s human resources department enact the four principles for a positive environment as outlined by the Harvard Business Review: fostering social connections, valuing empathy, going the extra mile, and encouraging open communication. From knowing a friendly face in the hall to sweet treats to acknowledging small celebrations, Lonza prioritizes community-building within the workplace.
