Writing in the Age of AI: A Roundtable

For writers and teachers, the emergence of generative AI like ChatGPT raises important questions about authorship, authenticity, labor, and ethics. This round-table discussion will share insights from students who have spent the past semester learning about writing technology and considering its implications for students, writers, and humanity in general. Our goal is not to present firm conclusions, but to shed light on the issues that affect how we want to think about and use AI writing tools.

  • Armani Canty is a professional writing major and Honors College member from Cottageville, South Carolina. She is a member of the Honors College Leadership Council, a peer tutor, and a part of the Presidential Ambassador program on campus.

  • Gabrielle Craft, also known as Gabby, is a biology major from Florence, South Carolina. She is an aspiring poet and is currently working on her autobiography.

  • Jermon Franklin is a senior chemistry major and Lander’s reigning Homecoming King.

  • Grace Harvey is an early childhood education major originally from western Michigan. She is a proud member of Teaching Fellows and Lander's Honors College. She is an avid enthusiast of paleontology, archeology, and various mythologies.

  • Bree Holbrook is a psychology major from Florence, South Carolina.

  • Bryce Lecroy is a senior English major with an emphasis in writing. He recently returned from a semester abroad at University of Winchester in England.

  • Hannah Lovett is from Nichols, South Carolina and is an English major with an emphasis in professional writing and minors in business administration and public relations. 

  • Kylie Medlin is a psychology and human services double major from Simpsonville, South Carolina. She is a member of the Honors College as well as an executive member of Gamma Phi Beta.

  • Michael Nastro is a math and CIS major from Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. He is also on Lander's baseball team. 

  • Taylor Neal is an English and psychology double major from Lancaster, South Carolina. She has had a story on AI's effect on English majors and writers published in Lander's Forum newspaper.

  • Claire Riley is a junior criminology major from Spartanburg, South Carolina. She also has minors in psychology and human services. Claire is the membership vice president for the Gamma Phi Beta sorority at Lander and works as a peer mentor for Lander's Career Services. 

  • Carly Rogers is an English professional writing major from Simpsonville, SC. She spends much of her time writing both free verse and form poetry, and also writes creative fiction in the science fiction/fantasy genres. She has published a contemporary poetry collection, Deleterious Weeds and Dandelion Seeds, and has also been published in the American High School Poets May Flowers 2023 anthology.

  • Jack Smith is a creative writing major originally from Fort Wayne, Indiana. He is the president of the Lander Tabletop Association and is currently working on, taking part in, and running a total of seven games. 

  • Molly Smith is a mathematics major from Beaufort, South Carolina. She hopes to pursue a career in data analysis after graduating in December.
